Loony Tunes used to pepper cannibalistic jokes throughout their cartoons, and no one batted an eye.  Those were the days.

I kind of thought I wouldn’t enjoy them as much as I got older. Wrong. Even just listening to some of the jokes in posting this clip to Oppo, I was crying laughing.

Even just little extra details I missed , like Bugs’ long blather in “Hawaiian” including the word “wahine” and ending in “BEEEEEEEE-OHHH”.

That’s because they weren’t just writing for children back then. These were people with real talent using their platform to make inside jokes and comments on society and human nature , riffing off the memes of the day, and of course puns. Lots and lots of puns. There were layers for all ages.

Then we got Dora and Teletubbies et al, and cartoons tried to teach kids stuff.

One of the only things I know of with as high an “off-the-wall” strange humor index is Homestar Runner. I don’t think it’s an accident that the peak of Termite Terrace was when they had next to no adult supervision, and the Brothers Chaps are highly independent: you have to be a nut to do this stuff, a freely circulating broth lets the cream rise to the top, and nuts and suits don’t mix.

Adventure Time and Phinea s   and Ferb are two cartoons that tried to throw something in there for the adults.

Phineas and Ferb was the best cartoon in the tri -state area.

I also really enjoyed The Ba ckyardigans, especially for how every episode was carefully constructed around a specific musical genre .
